Pretty old school detective fiction, emphasizing the crafting of elaborate puzzles, with anagrams, locked rooms, etc. Superratiocination kind of shit. I'm not a huge fan, and read this primarily for research -- trying to dig out any roots for the recent burst of South African crime fiction. It's interesting that Godfrey's engagement as a journalist committed to resisting/challenging the apartheid state (as an editor with Drum magazine) didn't bubble up, even indirectly, in most of these stories.
