A fantastic long article tracking a scientific puzzle and the quest to unpuzzle. Kakaes writes lucidly and generously, but also concisely, about the way a desire for the unknown fuels (and complicates) the search for knowledge. It's a cool depiction of how science gets done--the making of the sausage, a messy process belied by the post-solution myths of discovery and clarity. I particularly liked the tussles between engineers and theoreticians--the friction between heat and gravitas, technical and cosmological design.
