I loved the general ambition of this thing: the author asks, "What monsters don't people write about any more, or what fears seem so dated as to be unusable? And how might I then use them, effectively?:
So we have a mummy, a skeleton, etc. (And in addition to fetishizing cool old monsters, the author has a jones for Jameses, both M.R. and Henry, which at times invigorates and at other times enervates.) I loved a couple of the stories, hated only one (the comp tutor mise-en-abyme, which is a shame given that Langan and I share a job around comp, but... this just didn't work for me). A pretty good collection, all told, and I will pick up the novel he has coming.
